Students at The Grammar School recently participated in an exciting and interactive piloting session organised as part of the CipherEngine Erasmus+ initiative.

The session introduced students to the fascinating world of cybersecurity, cryptography, and digital safety through hands-on activities, real-world examples, and collaborative discussions. Designed for secondary school students with basic computer knowledge, the piloting session aimed to make complex cybersecurity concepts both accessible and engaging.

One of the highlights of the workshop was the practical encryption activities, where students learned how messages can be hidden and protected using transposition ciphers. Students also examined how attackers exploit weaknesses in systems and why cybersecurity remains one of the biggest challenges in the digital world.

The session encouraged active participation, critical thinking, teamwork, and discussion. Students debated important modern issues, including the use of AI-powered surveillance systems in schools and the ethical concerns surrounding data privacy and monitoring technologies.

CipherEngine’s goal is to increase students’ interest and engagement in STEM education, particularly in the fields of cybersecurity and cryptography. Through interdisciplinary learning activities integrated into secondary school education, the project helps students develop essential digital competencies and soft skills while promoting responsible and safe online behaviour.

The CipherEngine project is a European collaboration involving partners from the Netherlands, Greece, Cyprus, and Spain, working together to create innovative educational materials, activities, and learning experiences for young students.
